Long time since I posted an update.  Some things that have happened and/or are happening in my life:

-In my second quarter at SCAD-Atlanta, and loving it.  I finally feel like my teacher's aren't just rolling their eyes at my enthusiasm for photography, not to mention meeting other students who are just as enthusiastic.

-Gotten involved heavily with The Connector, the SCAD-Atlanta student newspaper.  My photos have been featured on the cover at least every other issue for the past two quarters, it's great to be appreciated.  Though I have to say I've been lazy about showing up to meetings consistently, which I feel kinda bad about. :/

-Shooting a wedding in Chicago in a few weeks, should be fun.  Getting paid in a lens. :D

-Been bitten by the car bug.  I got it from watching waaaaaay too much Top Gear, I can't wait for the new series next month!!

-Shot a little bit for the SCAD-Atlanta campus photographers, a very laid back bunch of guys who definitely know their stuff.

Finally, I have to tell you about an eye opening experience I've had recently.  For a photo 1 assignment i have to emulate a working photographer, who still shoots personal work, of my choosing.  I choose ~cweeks for his marvelous street photography.  On a whim I changed my facebook status to say "Charlie is wondering if anyone has a rangefinder they can lend him for a few days?"  I didn't really think anyone would offer, but a friend of mine said he had an old Leica IIIf he could loan me.  I thought it would be a beat up junker with a fungus-filled lens with a sticky iris.  I mean, why else would someone who I've met only twice in real life loan me a Leica?

I was wrong.

This Leica is MINT.  The focus is smooth, the aperture clicks solidly in all the right places, the shutter has a confident *thwap* to it, the film counter works, hell it even has a self-timer, and there aren't even any scratches on the body.  Most importantly however, the rangefinder is accurate as it was coming out of the factory.  It's small, but you know it solid like it's made out of pig-iron.  This camera is over 50 years old and is a true testament to German engineering at it's best.  The best part?  He got it at a garage sale for FIVE DOLLARS.  FIVE DOLLARS PEOPLE, this camera goes for around a thousand in the condition it's in, and that's just the body!

So I spent a day shooting with it at the Georgia Renaissance Festival, and even though I only went through a roll and a half of 36-exp Illford 100, I only pulled out my 40D once or twice for some stage events that I knew I wanted to post as soon as I could and shoot in color.  It is AMAZING the difference shooting with one of these makes.  I only got 'caught' taking a photo once or twice, and one of the actors gave me a knowing wink after I took the shot.

Shooting with a Leica is like owning an older performance BMW.  Most people are going to think you're an idiot for buying a car that's that expensive, that old, has no modern amenities (the leica doesn't have a light meter), and that 'ugly.'  But if you run into someone who knows what you know, who feels what you feel, they'll give you a smile and wink, and you'll share a moment in your knowledge.

Ok that sounded pompous, but it's true.

You feel so connected with the camera, but at the same time, connected with the moment.  Modern SLR's place themselves between you and your subject, obscuring your ability to connect with the subject.  A rangefinder doesn't obscure this view, making you a more friendly and approachable photographer.

Not that it doesn't have faults.  The viewfinder is tiny compared to modern standards, and the rangefinder is actually in a separate window.  This makes focusing a little cumbersome, especially since I wear eyeglasses and that makes looking through the narrow rangefinder window even more difficult.

And then there's the film loading mechanism.  Ze Germans had this marvelous idea to make the shell of the camera one solid piece.  This makes the camera tougher, easy to make, and leaves less to go wrong.  However, this also means you have to load the film through the bottom of the camera.  This is extremely hard to do in a rush, and the only way I've figured out how to reliably do it is to open the shutter using the Bulb setting and push the film down into the proper place with my finger.

But god is this a camera!  Even with it's faults I love it.  I love the small size, the quality, and the robustness.  God I want one...

DANM YOU WARREN, now the Leica bug has bit me!

Update!:  Crap!  My dA subscription has expired.  Yes yes, I know, why don't I use the vast amounts of money I now seemingly have?  Well, I don't have it yet, and it's just enough to cover all my bills.  So, if you want to get me a christmas present buy me a dA subscription! :D

Ok, so life has been kickass recently, here's the rundown:

Got a new camera: Finally purchased a Canon 40D on monday, I am absolutely loving this camera.  It's a hell of a lot faster, more accurate, and well just fucking nicer than my old 300D.  (which I will probably be turning into a dedicated IR camera).  I already posted a picture that I took with it and expect many more to come!  Now, how did I afford this camera being unemployed at the moment you ask?

Freelance Gigs!: Last week my mother told me that my old church youth group director wanted to talk to me about updating the church website.  I thought that it would be one or two set-ups, maybe taking pictures during services.  BOY WAS I WRONG!  There was a list of about 10 different things they wanted photos of, all of which took place at different days and times.  After doing the math for rentals and such, and a significant discount (probably more than 50%) since this is my old church and Ellen (the former youth director) is totally awesome, I came up with enough to buy not only the camera but have some left over for bills for the next month or so.  On top of christmas money from my relatives (my parents gave me an advance on theirs to buy the camera) I'll also be able to pay off my credit-card finally!!!

And finally, I GOT INTO SCAD!!!!:  w00t, fucking W00T.  This is probably the best news I have had all year.  Sure I'd already gotten into AIA, but that's no real effort, any idiot with a SSN and a pulse can get into that place.  But SCAD, FUCK YEAH!  I'll be going to the Atlanta campus, which for now is fine with me.  It is provisional, I've got to maintain a 2.0 GPA, not drop a class and take a full course load (15-16 hours) or else they'll drop me like a rock, but I can do all that!

So yeah, officially the best week EVAR!!!

Whew!  I just finished up going to Dragon*Con 2007 here in atlanta, with a massive cold too!  I got tons of great photos of costumes, panels, and much much more!  It would be rather tedious to upload them all one by one to this site, so I've batch uploaded them to my flickr account, please follow this link!

So I've decided that I need to go back to school.

Note that this is my own decision, not my parents, not my friends, my own.

Over the past year and a half I have realized that if I stay were I am, things are going to go nowhere fast.  Not because of a lack of talent, ambition, or equipment: far from it.  I seek to go back to school because I really don't know where to start.

At the moment my clients consist of my friends, who often can't pay or I give reduced rates, and people who waltz into the store. (and given where I work, it pretty much the same story as with the friends)  Besides a large stack of business cards I have no advertising, no connections; I feel completely cut off from my goals, and no way to reach them.

Besides school.

Note that I won't be going back to a liberal arts school, I've had my fill of the way a majority of them treat art majors: wooing them with promises of attentive professors and an open environment.  These so called liberal "arts" colleges do nothing but inundate artists with the same damned message: You're wasting your time being an artist, choose a normal career, these "core" classes we're making you take are far more important than any 'art' class we offer.

I am sick and fucking tired of the general world seeing artists as a bunch of lazy dream stricken cloud gazers; We are people, like your mother, your father, your lover, all your other lovers!  We have a passion for what we do and we will do what ever it takes, just like you, to do it.

*sigh*

Sorry, ranted there, but it had to be said.

So yeah, Art School for me thank you very much.

I'm thinking either AIA (Art Institute in Atlanta) or SCAD Atlanta.  SCAD is probably more known (whether that reputation is good or not depends on who you talk to) but AIA seems easier to get into and from what I've heard (a new co-worker who is currently attending class there) promises better connections when you're ready to leave.

So yeah, time to go work on my portfolio.

Much Better

1 min read
Yeah, sorry for that last journal there, hope I didn't scare anyone!  I'm feeling much better now, even though not much has changed, I guess it's the little things that matter.

Went over to where my old boss is working, and by god I had forgotten how much fun it is to work with him!  Not only is he an amazing salesman, but the guy is cesspool of knowledge concerning everything camera related!
